American Pride are members of Fairfax County Youth Football League (FCYFL) and The Virginia American Youth Football Alliance (VAYFA). FCYFL is the largest independent football league in Virginia and one of the most successful youth football leagues in the country. VAYFA's membership includes associations from Loudoun, Prince William, Fairfax, Alexandria, Fauquier, Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties. On a national level, APYFL and VAYFA compete under American Youth Football (AYF). AYF is the largest youth football organization in the world. With over 1 million members that span the entire United States and across the globe. Every team in AYF has the opportunity to compete for State, Regional and National Championships. FCYFL WEIGHTED FOOTBALL
Registration is open to kids living in Price William County based on which elementary school area you are in. You must be 7 years old as of October 1 & no older than 16 as of October 1 of the current calendar year. The Fairfax County Youth Football League is a full contact tackle football league. How are teams chosen?
Anklebiter teams are drafted as to create equal teams.
The higher weight classes can have up to 3 divisions based on the number of teams in that weight class. The division are:
American - typically the most experienced
Central - some experience
National - typically the least experienced
FCYFL has specific rules as to which division a team is placed into which is based on the number of teams a club has in that specific weight class. Athletic ability is also taken into account when deciding which division a player is placed in. If there is more than one team in the same division, the teams are drafted to create equal teams at that division level.
The first week of practice is a evaluation week. The first 3 days are non-contact days and either no equipment or helmets only are worn. Wearing of the helmets is to get the players used to wearing them. The last two days full pads are worn and full contact is allowed.
Typically the draft is completed and teams are split within the first few days of the second week of practice.
Any players that misses the first week of practice (evaluation week), must be evaluated by the coaching staff of the highest division within that weight class.
How are games scheduled and who schedules them?
Regular season games start the second or third week of September and conclude in mid November (later for American Conference teams advancing to the Metro Bowl). Games may be scheduled for any day of the week. See "Game Schedule Information" for more details.
In the event of rain outs, games may be scheduled any day of the week at any any location. Games scheduled on natural grass fields that are rained out, maybe moved to field with artificial turn. A significant number of rain outs may extend the season or require more games that normal to be played during the week. It is highly unlikely that the season will need to be extended due to the increase in Artificial Turf fields throughout Fairfax County.
Game Schedule Information
The following is provided by the FCYFL.
- Approximately 70% of FCYFL games are scheduled on Saturdays.
- Approximately 25% of FCYFL games are scheduled on Sundays.
- Approximately 5% of FCYFL games are scheduled on weeknights (Mon-Fri).
- All game scheduling is done regardless of the Washington Redskins home or away schedule.
- Weekend games are scheduled without deference to religious denominations; decisions to play in the hours/day of a game are individual. The potential exists that conflicts may occur and FCYFL is going to play the games. Parents need to know the possibility exists for a conflict and personal decisions must be made by the family to participate or not.
- All game scheduling is done with the available space given to us by the individual member clubs.
- When games are postponed, they must be made up as soon as possible because of limited facilities available, unpredictability of weather, and the Thanksgiving Holiday. This means games could be rescheduled as quickly as the day after a postponement!
- With the introduction of the new turf fields coming on line around the county, FCYFL will schedule and reschedule games on these weatherproof sites in the best interests of finishing the season on time and not canceling any games! This scheduling pattern takes precedent over the “home” game concept experienced in the past. When possible, we will continue to schedule home games as in the past, however, “playing the game” is our most important goal. In the next few years, sport fields in our region will undergo a MAJOR renovation to synthetic turf surfaces and we must be flexible and adjust ahead of the curve.
- The availability of game officials and the weather are the primary reasons for the initial schedule and schedule changes.
FCYFL has (24) member clubs from Gainesville to Alexandria, from Manassas to Loudon County. FCYFL tries to “look” at weekly match-ups, time and location of games when schedules are developed. However, the availability of facilities (lighted) or lack of lighted fields, significantly impacts “convenient” geographical scheduling that parents may look at as challenging at best! Teams are matched by draw not by geography, so the possibility exists in each weight class that all clubs may play any other club, anywhere in the county. We are cognizant that traffic, early morning, and late night games, are considered an inconvenience by some people. The bottom line is that in most cases we have no choice so the decision to play in the FCYFL must made knowing these conditions exist.
When does the schedule come out and why?
The game schedule typically comes out the Monday before the first weekend of games. This may seem late, however as much as everyone would love to have it earlier, there are many factors beyond American Pride's control which determine this timing. Our parent league, FCYFL, does the scheduling for all clubs. They have over 300 teams, which means about 1,100 different games, on 50 fields to schedule and coordinate with the officiating organizations. In addition, rosters and final number of teams in divisions can't be determined with certainty until after all players are weighed in. The final weigh-in is typically the Sunday of the weekend before the first games are to be played. Late weigh-ins are held to accommodate players who are working hard to make weight and for families who move into the Northern VA area late due to military change of duty stations. Each time the number of teams changes, the schedule must be re-done, which means all information must be re-validated to prevent mistakes and misinformation from being distributed.
